Curtis & Charity’s Story

For Curtis and Charity, staying in New Directions’ Family Shelter has been, “just one blessing after another”. When discussing their homeless experience, Curtis reflected “I was always taught there is a storm before the blessing”. This family had been living in their car while expecting their baby. Curtis, wife Charity, and their 2-week old son were referred to us by a community partner, and we had room for them.

“We came in with a plan that we weren’t going to be here long… We were gonna work on getting back on our feet and that’s what we did”. Quickly, Curtis secured a job. Charity started adult education to work toward her GED. And now, they have their own apartment. Both attribute their recent success to keeping a strong focus...“As long as you have focus, and it’s a strong focus, nothing’s gonna stop you from accomplishing what you need to get done... It worked for us.”
