Nick & Haley’s Story

Nick and Haley grew up in Myrtle Beach and their families have both lived in the area for many years. They became homeless after Nick lost his job and Haley became pregnant, resulting in her no longer being able to work the job she had at the time. They came to our shelter just before the birth of their third child, Elliana, with their two children, Nicholas Jr. and Luna, age 2. Elliana was born two weeks after they were placed in New Directions for Families. Haley experienced severe postpartum depression but was connected with services to help, thanks to the family shelter case manager. Their case manager also helped Nick create a resume, which resulted in him getting a good job with a local lumber company, and with getting their children placed in daycare. They began saving for the family of 5 to move out on their own and in just 4 short months were able to move into their new apartment. Nick and Haley got to know one of New Direction’s community partners, Pye-Barker, who provided Christmas for their family. Upon meeting Nick, Pye-Barker was so impressed with him they offered him a full-time job with benefits. Today, their family is thriving with Nick at his new job, Haley, now in nursing school, and their children in daycare.
